Hello insiders, we’re happy to announce that high contrast support is now enabled by default for all users in all channels. Both the web browser and web content now fully support the high contrast themes available in Windows. This feature brings significantly improved legibility and readability of textual content.

To give this a try, select a high contrast theme in Windows settings. For Windows 10 and Windows 8, high contrast settings are in the Settings app under Ease of access. For Windows 7, right click on the desktop and choose Personalize and then choose one of the high contrast themes from the list of themes presented.

You can use high contrast occasionally or all the time – we’ll increase contrast on every site, so that you can continue to focus on content, not style. Our implementation of high contrast in the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge matches the support we offer in legacy Microsoft Edge, and guarantees text readability against any background by adding a text backplate filled with the system background color.

For developers we’ve added a number of new features:

Support for new CSS media feature forced-colors
The ability to override any modifications with forced-colors-adjust property
Support for new CSS System Colors keywords
Aliased -ms-high-contrast to forced-colors, and -ms-high-contrast-adjust to forced-colors-adjust
Match prefers-color-scheme: light or dark values based on Windows theme primary colors.
